About

We are a group of resident and emigrant Israelis. As the name suggests, we hold left-wing opinions in terms of local politics. We spent the majority of our adult lives in Israel, and we feel we can provide an insider’s view that is at times missed by those peering from the outside through the window pane. We come from different backgrounds and hold different opinions regarding many topics, but share the belief in justice and a just end to the Arab-Israeli conflict. We believe in seeking non-violent solutions and try to stand by our principles in the face of the sometimes-harsh reality. Most of us have blogs in Hebrew, where we speak our thoughts, sending them out to be heard. This blog is meant to speak to the wider, English speaking audience, lest the world lives in ignorance. We do not claim objectivity. We cannot sit idly by and write a dry, opinion-free account of the events happening in our homeland. We do, however, promise to speak the truth. We promise to bring Israel to you, as beautiful and as terrible as we see it with our own eyes.

These are the people behind this blog:

Dotan Zebrowitz Harpak, born 1980, living in Haifa, Israel.

I am a graduate student in the Department of Politics and Government at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Be’er Sheva, Israel. After completing my B.A. in Sociology-Anthropology and History at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, I served for two years as a Jewish Agency for Israel Shaliach (Emissary) at the Union for Reform Judaism in New York. In this position, I worked in the college department on various Israel-related activities with and for college students and teens

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold…

/ W.B. Yeats

The above excerpt illustrates best the daily reality that I, as a human being in his right mind who happens to be an Israeli citizen, have been facing for several years.

The mass migration of media and public opinion from a (more or less) balanced to a right-winged perspective brings forth some of the most outrageous legislative propositions that are all about determining what people are to know, to think and to believe. It’s Orwell’s 1984 in its initial stages.

I, whose eyes are open to the horrific potential that accompanies this country’s brilliance, am not alone.

I am proud to be a member of the Israleft group, for our voice is the hope that is long lost for too many Israelis.
